Illustrate a walk!

In this workshop we are exploring interesting ways to document a walk in the form of a 'story' with a beginning, middle and end.

This format makes the task of journaling much easier and provides a fantastic framework to add in some lovely extra bits like: a map, a pocket field guide, explorer's notes and little sketches of curious treasures found along the way!

We will be using a basic range of art materials...no specialist equipment and all the exercises can be done with what you like to use or have available in your art cupboard!

Includes Step-By-Step Instructions and Tips & Tricks

1. Embrace Autumn's Palette
Capture the essence of autumn in your sketchbook as we work with limited colours. It makes everything easier...promise!! The aim is to record the 'feeling' of your walk, the mesmerizing colors of the season, the vibrant hues of leaves, the golden tones of harvest, and the earthy shades of the changing landscape.

2. Nature as Your Muse
Step outdoors and let nature inspire your sketches. The rustling leaves, crisp air, and seasonal sensations will infuse your art with the authentic spirit of autumn along with hand written notes, maps and observations.

3. Artistic Storytelling
Learn the art of storytelling through drawing. Working with a simple box system is a great way to get into journaling...a bit like how comics weave stories, we will be creating our own visual narrative.

Fun, Friendly and Welcoming!

This is a great workshop for all levels from non-drawer to experienced sketcher and everyone in between! Creativity and artistic license are welcomed and encouraged!

There's lots of small, fun tasks to work on after the workshop to keep you going with your sketchbook habit and the collection of techniques can be adapted to suit all different types of illustrated journal such as a travel diary or nature sketchbook. Use them as a helpful way to break down a busy, overwhelming scene into bitesize chunks!

By using a sketchbook to record life's events, big and small or as a safe place to experiment and find your inner artist, you can learn a lot about yourself whilst developing your own creative skills.

Just a note to say thank you for the for the class last night. You gave us some really useful starters and I like the 'you cannot go wrong and if you do just paint/paper over it' approach. The classes are helping me to feel interested again in what I am doing and spurring me on to do more, so, a big 'thank you' for that too.

Lucia is an artist, letterer and teacher who loves creating illustrated journals and artist books. She has become known for a unique and creative approach to her work which has been described as 'quietly joyful...a nostalgic, moving and profound ...a treasure chest of creativity and inspiration'

Her journals and sketchbooks, which record life as it happens, conversations, inspirations and experiments, have become works of art in their own right. Many of Lucia's sketchbooks are handmade with a range of papers and combine traditional and experimental hand lettering with watercolour, collage and mixed media sketches.

She is inspired by a diverse range of things: the old, rusty and wonky, worn architectural patinas, ancient diagrams, aged buildings, old books and ephemera, explorers' sketchbooks and vintage field guides.
