Sketchbook Workshop: The Nature Table

During this class, I share my techniques and approaches to creating a collective sketchbook page reminiscent of a primary school nature table, remember those?!

Collective sketchbook pages are fun and accessible because you can build up the page slowly over a longer period of time. Adding elements like this break a detailed page in to bitesize chunks!

It's a great way to begin or continue a visual journal and a unique approach to recording a special place, whether that's somewhere you've travelled to or your own back garden!

During the class I share:

  • My sketching and drawing techniques
  • A brilliant drawing/tracing cheat which is great for beginners!
  • Advice and support with materials
  • Colour mixing
  • Watercolour techniques
  • Layout ideas (and cheats!) with the addition of notes and text.

What do I need to take part?

  • A selection of coloured pencils/water soluble pencils and or crayons 
  • A sketchbook or cartridge paper pad
  • Some watercolour paint
  • An Eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Paint brushes (pointed size 2, 4, 6, 10)
  • Kitchen roll
  • Water pot
  • Mixing Palette  
  • A dark brown oil based coloured pencil  If you prefer ink, use your favourite pen!
  • A watercolour pencil in a browny beige.
  •  A 2B pencil
  •  A piece of copier paper on which to lay out your objects
